How to Find The Perfect Fitting Bra for Woman with a Big Chest

By

Okay, here is more than I normally admit, but I am naturally a 34 DD also known as 34E. I'm not going to tell you tales of back aches, name calling, or anything like that. But having a larger chest is not all that it's cracked up to be. I'm lucky that I don't appear as big as I am with clothes on. That being said, my freshman year in college, I complained to a friend that my chest went up a cup size. A girl that lived across the hall peeked her head in the room goes, "Are you talking about Angie's breasts, yeah their big." Another story, my daughter I just adopted said to me at the dinner table shortly after she moved in, "How come you have such big boobs?" My husband excused himself as he I could see his back shaking from laughter. Then there's the day my dad said something about me stealing Dolly Pardon's figure. That being said, I am fortunate, for the most part, I don't look as big as most DD girls do.

BIG CHEST INSECURITIES

Bathing Suit Shopping: In a bathing suit, that's a total different story. In fact, I don't like wearing swimsuits unless they are intended for grandma's. My dad's comment came while wearing a bikini I was excited to find. Bathing Suit shopping is a pain. All for the same reason as everyone else, the tummy, but also because my chest does not fit in typical bathing suit tops. I've always wanted to be able to wear a bikini that covered my chest to a semi-modest degree without being a-like. So when Victoria Secret finally started selling my size in a cutesy tops, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, my dad's comment kind of tapered my excitement, and realized that my bikini will be packed for swimming with my husband, and well that's it.

I Had To Throw Modesty Out The Window To A Degree: Now, I know some girls would really love to have a large chest. I'm lucky, and in someways, I'm happy with my size. But I will have to say, shirts never look as cute on me. I used to be completely modest and refused to wear anything that was slightly low-cut, because I would have cleavage. Low to a degree that smaller chested women would not have cleavage and it would look modest on them. But I was constantly feeling like I could not find cute clothes. It was several years after I got married that I gave up on trying to be completely modest, because it was nearly impossible when you have a large chest. People think tight shirts are immodest and low cut. The same shirts would not be immodest on a smaller chested girl.

Gawkers: Since I gave up trying to be completely modest, I do find their are shirts I don't feel comfortable in. When you are larger chested, if you choose to show it off, guys and girls alike will stare. When that happens, the shirt goes in the Good Will pile, and I make a mental note on not buying that style again. Now, I know that people don't gawk at my chest just because it's nice to look at, but because well, they are there. It's like looking at someone with a big zit on their face, and you're trying you're hardest not to stare!

The Bra Buying Issue: I think the worst part of all this is bra shopping. See, DD is common for 40DD people, but when you are thin and larger chested, forget it. IMPOSSIBLE. I have less fingers and toes than how many times I have gone bra shopping and left crying. I remember the first time I went from 34D to 34DD and actually I was pushing DDD right then. The Victoria Secret Lady said, "I'm really sorry, we don't have anything in that size. Really? Nothing in that size? You are Victoria Secret for goodness sakes. It was about three years after that they started selling that size, and only one bra that is cute in that size. Since then, they have begun selling more in that size. I partly think it's because of the increase in breast implants or my mom thinks that girls today are growing bigger boobs because of hormones in meat. For whatever reason, Victoria Secret finally sells my size.

TIPS IN BUYING THE RIGHT BRA

Now, after ten years of bra hassles and annoyances, i have finally started being able to buy a bra in my size that looks cute for my husband and for me, while also not costing me a pretty penny. Here are my tricks.

First Make Sure It Fits Well: I strongly recommend getting measured, and not just by anybody, but someone who is experienced at measuring sizes. I always try to pick the Victoria Secret lady I recognize, which means they have been at it longer. Then once you are measured look for cute bras in your size and try them on.

Things to look for when trying bras on: When trying on a bra, you need to make sure it looks good as well as fitting in the proper places. Here is a very basic list

The straps are snug on shoulders, but if you pull them off your shoulders, you are still being supported. The straps should be their for extra comfort and let's face it perkiness, but should not be the sole support system.

The band around your chest should be snug, but not tight around your chest, and parallel to the ground. What I mean by that is it is not riding up your back. If it rides up your back then you need a smaller band width. For instance if you are wearing a 40 and it is riding up your back, then go to a 38 and see if it's snug, but comfortable.

The portion in between the breasts should be flat on your chest. If you can drop a quarter in it like it's a slot, then it's not the right bra for you. There should be no gap between your chest and this little portion between the cups.

The breast cups should contour perfectly to your chest. That means there should be no gap between the pad and your chest, nor should you have what my friend so eloquently calls "butt boob" where your chest literally bubbles out of your chest. This is actually the hardest part as many of us have different shaped breasts. Some of us rounder, some of us more oblong, so what fits one person with your size, might not fit you.

How Does It Look Under A T-shirt 2patricias suggested putting on a light t-shirt over your bra, to see how it looks with a t-shirt on. This is so incredibly important, because there are bras I thought were good, then when I put them on, I noticed I had some overflowing action happening. Good suggestion!

If you are like me, Isabella Snow has an awesome website that gives great bras that would be excellent for those who are skinny, yet larger chested. You can check it out here! I also have placed three of the bras she recommends for bigger chested women that I found on Amazon throughout this page if you are interested.

I read through this with great interest, but try as I might, I simply can find no sympathy for a woman so well endowed, none, zip, nada. :)

Sincerely, 34B, barely..... Great hub!

Very honest, interesting Hub. I ran into a lady last week who paid over 100.00 for a "Harness bra" for her daughter who had to have one custom made. I used to wear a back brace due to an injury and I know how it feels to be in a corchet.

angela_michelle 2 years ago

Interesting. I fortunately am not so big I need a harness bra. I don't think I would ever want to have to wear a corset.

We all have our own cross to bear. I can think of worse things. Thank you for sharing. :-)

I would not exactly cal it a cross to bear. :)

Thats a lesson for the chubby ladies, welldone michele.

Thanks kachis! I think a well fitting bra can also make you look slimmer as well!

Pat (size 30DD, but almost always wearing a 32D) says - wonderful Hub and you do have my sympathy.

I don't live in the USA, but on a visit a few years ago I tried Victoria's Secret and was told very firmly that they don't do bras in THAT size. I guess maybe thay do now.

The thing is, I don't really have big boobs (well, I don't) but have a TINY back

One other fitting tip - take a cheap, thin tee shirt, to try on over the top of the bra you are trying on. It is a good way to check whether your boobs are poking out over the top of the bra. (Trust me, this is not a look you want).

angela_michelle 23 months ago

Actually they still don't do 30DD, but they do do 32D. Total Discrimination, right? LOL.

Oh, the t-shirt idea is a good idea, I will have to add that in my hub!

I think I know what you mean about the not big boobs thing. I never thought of mine as that big. I've gained a little weight, and now I think I really do, but I have been surprised how many people will say I do have a large chest. Who cares really... I'm happy with me and that's all that should matter. It is nice, my husband is happy with me too. :) LOL>

Just imagine the savings you made on breast implants, not all are gifted so those who are gifted should walk around with a smile not worry about those who are not.

34E is a perfect size in or out of cloth atleast not fake which create discomfort after paying so much...

angela_michelle 23 months ago

solar! haha, I would NEVER have gotten implants. I don't think. I'm actually pleased with my size, but it's really hard to look good in clothes. Smaller chested women have a LOT easier time!

alicewaverley 22 months ago

Exactly right - so easy to buy large cup sizes for large chest measurements, but where I live, anything above a C cup for my 32" size, and you can forget it. Thanks goodness for the internet eh? A great hub Angela, thanks.

angela_michelle 22 months ago

Yes, i am so thankful for the Internet, I just wish that all 34DDs fit the same. I have figured out by looking at the shape of the cup to see if it's going to be the right fit for me. :)

I'm a little later coming to this Bra party, but I do empathize with you. I wasn't always been the size I am now. I'll leave it at that. And it's not because I've gained a huge amount of weight. There is a store here in Birmingham that will fit you and I have made my way there and cried when I bought my first (way too much to spend)bra that truly fit. Great hub, thanks for the info Angela_Michelle!

angela_michelle 18 months ago

Well, welcome to the big busted bra party!!! I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one who has cried when getting fit for a bra. Although, I have a feeling your cry was for a different reason. Maybe not. Not a fan of the big busted bra, although the big bust is okay... most of the time. :) LOL

Judicastro 18 months ago

No dear girl it was truly not a cry of happiness. When you are big busted gravity has a way of doing not so nice things and I hated having to spend so much just to bring those babies back up to where they are supposed to be!! (-; Ha!

angela_michelle 18 months ago

If only the smaller chested women had any idea how we feel about our bigger tatas! :) I would have loved to been on the itty bitty titty committee. Not that I haven't grown to love my body breasts and all.

another option that is really not as expensive as youi might expect is a custom madde bra.. surf on over to my website www.personaldesignbras.com and you can see photos of some of the work I've done for women all over the world.. a majority of my clients are women with small ribcages and large breasts... it is just plain difficult to buy pretty bras in styles and sizes that suit that body type.

angela_michelle 14 months ago

I'll check it out. :) I hope others do too. :)
