What to Wear: How To Choose The Right Glasses for Your Face Shape and Coloring

I love wearing and buying glasses. I think they add personality to your look. If I had my way, I would own several pair dependent on the look I want to show off that day. Not only do you want to reflect your personality in the glasses you choose, but you want to make sure that it looks good with your complexion, hair coloring, eye color, and most importantly your face shape. You want to make sure the whole look is pulled together nicely, so that way people notice you first, your glasses second.

In order to understand what glasses look best on you, you need to know what face shape you are. The best way to do this is by looking in a mirror, close one eye, and trace the outline of your face. You will find your face is either closest to oval, heart, circle, or square shape. As a general rule, you want a pair of glasses that contrast against the shape of your face. On the other hand, coloring should compliment your coloring.

If you have an oval face shape you can get away with most any glasses. Often times when wearing glasses we strive to cause our faces to appear more oval in shape and less heart, round, or angular. So when you start with the perfect oval shape, you are not striving to change the appearance of your face.

Oval shapes means that your face is proportionately equal throughout. Your chin is not very narrow, but not wide either. Same with your forehead.

Heart shape faces are much harder to find a pair that matches our features. You will have wider foreheads, narrow chin, and higher cheekbones.

The main goal in a heart shaped face is to minimize the width of the upper portion of your face, as well as offset the very narrow chin.

The styles that would most suit a heart shaped face will have cat eye frame because it will help balance out the narrow chin. Butterfly glasses and round glasses are also good choices.

The ideal glasses will be wider at the bottom than they are at the top, because it offsets your thin chin. Also, you will want to make sure that the glasses go lower, because it will offset your wide forehead. You also want to avoid glasses that are very decorative or wide at the top; while this will only emphasize your already wide forehead and thin chin.

Rimless or very dull colors will suit this face shape, because it takes away the emphasis from the upper portion of your face.

Circle faces usually are shorter than oval faces, but still slightly oval in shape. You will have very soft curves and your face will have very few angular features. If you tend to have a chubby round face, then you want more horizontally wide rectangular frames. This will help thin your face, and make it appear longer as well. A square shaped face will usually be proportionate in both length and width. Wider forehead and wider chin.
